Should Women Shave Their Face? Benefits, Myths, and Must-Knows

There’s something about women shaving their faces that still makes people pause — and I get it. It sounds counterintuitive, and there are plenty of myths out there about thicker hair, irritation, or “man beards.” But here’s the truth: dermaplaning is one of my favorite treatments, and when done correctly, it can completely transform your skin.

Let’s clear up the confusion, debunk the myths, and walk through how to safely dermaplane at home for smoother, brighter skin.

First Things First: What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a form of gentle exfoliation that removes the top layer of dead skin cells and the fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) on the face using a small blade.

The goal isn’t hair removal — it’s skin renewal. By removing that dull surface layer, your skin instantly looks more radiant and your products absorb more effectively. Makeup applies more smoothly, and your overall complexion feels softer and more refined.

It’s safe for most skin types — even sensitive or pregnant skin — and it’s one of my go-to treatments to refresh dull or dry skin.

Myth-Busting: What Dermaplaning Won’t Do

Myth 1: “The hair grows back thicker or darker.”

Nope. It’s a common misconception, but shaving or dermaplaning does not change the structure, color, or thickness of your hair. When hair grows back, the blunt edge can make it feel slightly different, but it’s the same fine hair you had before.

Myth 2: “It causes breakouts.”

Actually, the opposite can be true. By removing dead cells and peach fuzz that trap oil and bacteria, dermaplaning can help prevent clogged pores and congestion. Just be sure you're properly cleaning your skin before and afterwards, and avoiding any active breakouts to ensure no bacteria has spread.

Myth 3: “It’s too harsh for sensitive skin.”

When done correctly (and gently), dermaplaning is incredibly mild. There’s no downtime, no peeling, and no irritation when the skin is properly prepped and hydrated afterward.

How to Dermaplane at Home: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Cleanse thoroughly.

Start with a clean, dry canvas. I like to use a gentle cleanser like Gentle Foaming Cleanser to remove all traces of makeup, oil, and debris.

Step 2: Tone the skin.

Saturate a cotton pad with Tonic and sweep it across your face. This helps remove any residue and preps your skin for the dermaplaning tool.

Step 3: Dermaplane gently.

Using a clean facial razor (I like Tinkle razors for at-home use), hold your skin taut and glide the blade at a 45° angle in short, downward strokes.

  • Work in sections: cheeks → chin/mouth → forehead.

  • Avoid any active breakouts or open cuts.

  • Take your time and be gentle — no need to press hard.

Step 4: Cleanse again.

After you’re finished, cleanse your skin a second time with Gentle Foaming Cleanser to remove any remaining debris and rebalance the skin.

Step 5: Hydrate + nourish.

Your skin is now primed to drink up nutrients. I like to dermaplane at night so I can follow with:

FAQs

How often should I dermaplane?

Once every 3–4 weeks. Doing it too frequently can over-exfoliate and cause irritation.

Can I reuse my razor?

I like to use each blade just once for the cleanest, smoothest shave possible. Every reuse dulls the edge, which means more tugging, more bacteria, and a higher chance of breakouts. These are my personal favorite because they’re inexpensive, sharp, and so easy to use!

Does it hurt?

Not at all. When done correctly, it’s painless, quick, and incredibly satisfying.

What’s the difference between in-office and at-home dermaplaning?

Professional treatments use a sterile surgical scalpel, allowing for deeper exfoliation. At-home tools are designed to be gentler and safer for personal use — perfect for maintaining results between appointments.

Dermaplaning isn’t about removing hair — it’s about revealing glow. It’s safe, effective, and one of the simplest ways to instantly refresh your complexion. With the right technique and post-care, it’s an easy addition to any skincare routine that helps every product (and every makeup application) perform better.

Your skin deserves to shine — not hide under a layer of dullness and peach fuzz.
