Benzoyl Peroxide + Tretinoin
Benzoyl peroxide is one of my go-to acne-fighting ingredients, but here’s the thing — it’s also a strong oxidizing agent. Back in the day, studies showed it could actually break down certain forms of tretinoin, making them less effective. Thankfully, most modern tretinoin formulations (think micronized or polymer-encapsulated) are much more stable than the old-school creams your derm may have prescribed decades ago. Still, I like to keep them on separate schedules: benzoyl peroxide in the morning, and tretinoin at night. That way you’re getting the full strength of each, and you’re not asking your skin to juggle two power players at once.
