Blair’s Hair & Scalp Routine: What Really Works for Me

I talk a lot about skin health—but one thing I don’t share as often is how much care I put into my hair and scalp. For me, the two are connected. Just like your skin, your scalp has its own microbiome, barrier, and unique needs. Over the years, I’ve learned that simple, intentional habits make the biggest difference.

Here’s a look at what I do to keep my hair and scalp balanced, healthy, and strong.

How Often I Wash

I typically wash my hair two to three times a week. That balance is intentional. Washing too often can strip natural oils and leave strands brittle, but not washing enough can create buildup that suffocates the scalp and clogs follicles.

There’s also the science of hair’s natural fragility when wet. Hair fibers swell with water, which stretches and weakens the cuticle. This is why brushing or tugging at wet hair often causes the most breakage. And because hair naturally sheds during the wash process, people who are already noticing thinning or hair loss sometimes avoid shampooing out of fear of seeing extra strands in the shower. The reality is, those hairs have already detached from the hair follicle before you even washed your hair — so while it may feel like washing makes a lot of hair come out at once, they were already coming out anyways.

For me, spacing washes 2–3 times weekly has been the sweet spot for scalp cleanliness, healthy oil balance, and minimizing unnecessary breakage.

The Tools I Trust

The Mason Pearson brush has been with me for years, and it’s one of the tools I use daily. It’s designed to distribute natural oils from the scalp through the lengths of the hair, which not only gives a polished shine but also supports overall hair health.

I also keep a wide-tooth comb in my shower to gently detangle while conditioner is still in my hair — never a regular brush on soaking wet strands. That small adjustment makes a huge difference in reducing breakage.

After showering, I always reach for the Unite 7 Seconds Detangler. My hair naturally tends to be prone to frizz and tangling, and this is the one product that consistently keeps everything smooth and manageable. It softens just enough to help me comb through without tugging, which really minimizes breakage over time. I also love that it adds a lightweight layer of protection before I use any heat tools — it acts almost like a shield, helping to prevent dryness and brittleness from styling.

And when it comes to styling, I rely on the Dyson Supersonic Nural. It automatically adjusts the heat level based on how close it is to the scalp, which means less risk of overheating the hair or scalp.

Small Habits That Make a Big Difference

I’m a big believer in the idea that the smallest rituals add up to the biggest changes. For hair, that starts with how I sleep. I change my pillowcase every other night — not just for my skin, but also for my scalp and hair. Oils, sweat, and product residue build up quickly on fabric, and re-exposing hair and skin to that night after night can clog pores, irritate the scalp, and dull the hair.

I also always use Silk Pillowcases. Unlike cotton, which roughs up the cuticle and can cause frizz or even split ends, silk minimizes friction so hair stays smoother and healthier. It also absorbs less product and oil, meaning more of my treatments stay on my skin and hair instead of transferring to my pillow.

Other little things I do: never tying my hair too tightly (tight ponytails and buns put pressure on follicles and can lead to traction breakage), always using a heat protectant when I do style with tools, and keeping hair ties fabric-covered instead of rubber. None of these are dramatic changes, but together they’ve kept my hair much stronger over the years.

The Products & Step That Changed Everything

When it comes to products, I keep my everyday lineup simple and supportive: Living Proof Advanced Dry Shampoo between washes to keep my scalp fresh and Virtue Healing Oil on my ends for hydration and shine.

I avoid anything heavy or waxy that could build up on the scalp and interfere with follicle health. For me, it’s not just about how hair looks immediately after styling — it’s about long-term strength and resilience.

And while those core products play a role, the real shift happened when I started incorporating something new into my routine months ago — something focused specifically on scalp health. I won’t share too much yet, but the difference has been undeniable. My hair feels fuller, ticker, and more resilient than it has in years, and I can honestly say this has been the biggest game-changer in my routine.

The truth is, your hair and scalp thrive when you care for them with the same intention as your skin. For me, it’s about balance: not over-washing, choosing the right tools, avoiding unnecessary damage, and creating small rituals that add up to long-term health.
